Akari-Rizal stands one win away from ending Batangas-New Zealand Bluefire’s reign.
Fresh off a gritty 92-88 overtime victory in Game 1, the Sparks head into Game 2 of the 2026 Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Finals on Sunday with a golden opportunity to capture the franchise’s first championship.
The opener had all the makings of a classic, with Akari-Rizal seeing a double-digit lead evaporate before regrouping in overtime, where Camille Sambile and Mar Prado delivered the biggest baskets to escape with the victory.
But Sparks head coach Derrick Pumaren knows the job is far from over despite moving within a win of the title, emphasizing the need for his team to remain locked in and avoid complacency heading into Sunday’s 6 p.m. showdown at the Paco Arena.
“Well, we cannot celebrate yet,” said Pumaren. “We still have to stay focused on the task at hand. We wanna take care of business on Sunday, hindi pwedeng ganun ulit. We just gotta be more poised and be more seasoned with how we handle things.”
Another composed performance could finally deliver Akari-Rizal its breakthrough championship in the tourney backed by Aktive, with Allana Lim, Raiza Palmera-Dy, Janine Pontejos, Sambile, and Prado eager to complete the job and bring the franchise its first title.
But winning Game 1 is one thing, and closing out a championship series is another. The Sparks know they’ll have to be even sharper against a desperate Batangas-New Zealand Bluefire side determined to keep its title defense alive.
Despite showing championship grit by erasing a double-digit deficit in the opener, the Valkyries now face the daunting task of bouncing back from a heartbreaking overtime loss, with their season and title reign hanging in the balance.
Batangas-New Zealand Bluefire cannot afford another sluggish start if it hopes to extend the series. Much of the Valkyries’ hopes will once again rest on the shoulders of reigning Most Valuable Player Afril Bernardino, but the defending champions will also need more from their supporting cast.
Pringle Fabruada, Snow Peñaranda, and Khate Castillo must provide consistent production to ease the burden on Bernardino if the Valkyries are to keep their back-to-back title bid alive and force a winner-take-all Game 3.
One team stands on the doorstep of history, while the other is fighting to extend its reign—setting the stage for a high-stakes Game 2 with everything on the line.
