The Philippines relinquished a significant lead they held at halftime as Japan mounted a comeback to win 7-9 in Pool D of the 2026 World Lacrosse Women’s Championship on Sunday
The Filipinas dominated the early stages of the game, showing efficiency on both offense and defense, frustrating the home team and taking a 6-3 lead at halftime. However, Japan regrouped in the second half, limiting the Philippines to just one goal while scoring six consecutive goals to secure the victory. Japan seized control with a little over six minutes remaining and added an insurance goal late in the game.

Scorers for the Philippines included Steph Lazo, Abby Manalang, Lizzie de Guzman, Emma Barrows, and Kalena Johnson, with Lazo and Manalang contributing assists. Sarah Nelson also notched an assist, and goalkeeper Abigail Beattie made five saves. Japan outshot the Philippines 22-15, but both teams had an equal share of draw controls and turnovers. Japan’s defense tightened up in the second half, preventing the Philippines from taking a shot in the fourth quarter.

Despite the loss, the Philippines showcased its competitiveness against a strong lacrosse nation like Japan, holding a three-goal lead at halftime before Japan’s seasoned team and strategic adjustments in the second half turned the tide of the game. The Philippines will face Czechia in their final Pool D match, both teams eager for their first win in the tournament following consecutive losses.
